$The original “Big Ben.” Properly “Big Ben” is the “Great Bell” not the Clock Tower. The new (present) Palace of Westminster opened in 1852 and this Big Ben – the great Bell – was cast by Warners of Norton, Stockton in 1856, intended to be named the Royal Victoria. However, it immediately developed a four inch crack and was replaced by the present one, cast in the Whitechapel Bell Foundry – which also fractured. Loose engraving.$
