Bartolomeo Colleoni (inset), who died in 1478, sold the services of his mercenary band to the highest bidder,  Colleoni fought for the rival cities of Venice and Milan, changing sides between the two several times.  The "condottieri", the men who negotiatied the price for each mercenary band, generally preferred to lead their men into battle at the head of the cavalry.
