| Caption | Haemoglobinometer, United Kingdom, 1850–1950. Haemoglobin is the chemical in the blood which carries oxygen and gives blood its red colour. A haemoglobinometer like this example assesses the amount of haemoglobin in the blood. It compares the patient’s sample to a colour chart representing various normal and depleted levels of haemoglobin. This is used to diagnose a medical condition such as anaemia, which manifests itself with a low red blood cell count or a low amount of haemoglobin.
