The Great Chaitya Temple (Cave 3) at Kanheri on the island of Salsette. Of the more than 101 Buddhist shrines that were carved into the rocky hill between the second century and the middle of the sixth, it is one of the earliest. At the time of the Daniells' travels, the island was separated from Bombay by numerous inlets of the sea, but it is now [1996] attached to the mainland by roads and railways. Archer op. cit.
