Caption | The ministry of Spencer Perceval defending their government, represented as a citadel, against attack by Opposition politicians. Coloured etching by S De Wilde, 1811. A satire on the fruitless hopes of Opposition politicians that the Prince Regent, on taking up the Regency, would dismiss the government of Spencer Perceval. From behind the ramparts Spencer Perceval fires a cannon. In the sky is a fiery cracker with the head of Sheridan. Behind the breached wall is the Woolsack. The Attorney-General Sir Vicary Gibbs fends off Sir Samuel Romilly. On the left Tierney topples off a wooden horse. Among the Opposition, the three Grenvilles (Lord Temple, the Marquess of Buckingham, and Lord Grenville) aim a battering ram at the wall. Created 1 March 1811. Contributors: De Wilde, Samuel (1751–1832). Work ID: gcjsqhpj. |
