Becket, Saint Thomas, also called Thomas à Becket, or Thomas of London (1118–1170) was Archbishop of Canterbury during the reign of King Henry II. His career was marked by a long quarrel with Henry and in 1170 four leading knights of the court took violent words of Henry literally, forced themselves into the Archbishop's presence, and, on his refusal to absolve the bishops, followed him into the cathedral and cut him down with their swords.
