Caption | A German itinerant medicine vendor on horseback selling his wares. Engraving by I Helman, 1777, after J Bertaux, 1776. The medicine vendor, left, has stopped outside a shop bearing as its shop-sign two pewter bowls (one of them a barber's bowl) and the inscription "La coupelle. Pour la" ("The Assay-house. For …"): the inscription may be a comment on the medicines being offered for sale. The vendor has vials of medicines in his saddlepack. He wears a tall striped hat and a fur-lined cloak suggesting eastern origin (Saxony or Poland). Left foreground, a soldier beats a drumroll to accompany the vendor's sales-talk. Created 1777. Quacks and quackery. Direct selling. Assaying. Selling – Drugs. Audiences. Costume – France – History (- 18th century). Dogs. Horses. Louis Jean Guéret (active 1773–1778). Contributors: Jacques Bertaux (1745–1818); Isidore-Stanislas Helman (1743–1809). Work ID: mbzeam5v. |
