Caption | This photographic print stereograph depicts the bodies of two (2) deceased Confederate States of America soldiers lying in a trench. The first soldier is in the center foreground and is only partly visible, with most of his body buried under dirt and debris. The second soldier lies in the middle of the photograph with his feet nearest the camera. The tunnels of the trenches visible behind him. In the right foreground is a wooden cheval de frise. The photograph is adhered to orange cardboard. The words "PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY" are printed vertically along the right edge of the mount, while the words "'THE WAR FOR THE UNION" are printed vertically on the left edge. Handwritten in the top left corner in pencil is the text "REBEL FORT MAHONE". Printed text on the reverse of the mount indicates the photograph was taken of Fort Mahone after the battle of Petersburg, Virginia, in April 1865. It also includes the text "PUBLISHED BY E & HT ANTHONY & CO.". Date: 1860s. Record ID: nmaahc_2015.222.15. |
