Departure of Charles II from Scheveningen

Active selection in cart:
Charles II’s embarkation was witnessed by large crowds. Surviving visual records correspond closely with written accounts of the day, such as that in the Hollandtse Mercurius: ‘many hundreds of carriages could be counted, still more carts, spectators and horses. Pedestrians blackened the road from The Hague to Scheveningen, and, as for the beach, as far as the eye could see. Never have more people been seen together in Holland.’. Origin: Amsterdam. Date: 1660. Object ID: RP-P-OB-81.893.
