Caption | In the calligraphic inscription to his portrait, Maurice is called ‘Prince of Orange’, the title he inherited after the death of his half-brother Phillip William in 1618. The clasped hands signify friendship, the parrot may refer to the eloquence of the person giving a toast with this glass, and the butterfly stands for the fleetingness of life. Origin: Northern Netherlands. Date: c 1618 – c 1625. Object ID: BK-NM-703. |
