Recto: A forest scene with a stag standing in the center foreground, scratching his right ear. In the background left, a huntsman is preparing to shoot an arrow at the animal. This is Stradanus's preliminary drawing for a print (pl. 36) in the Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium series, engraved by Jan Collaert II and published in Antwerp by Philips Galle. The finished drawing is at the Louvre (Musée du Louvre, Paris , inv./ 20.497). Verso: Seven lines of inscription below sketch of the hunstmen and stag, both by Luigi Alamanni, Stradanus' advisor and collaborator. Made in: Florence, Italy. Date: 1590s.
