Tennis

Tennis. Newport, Rhode Island. (Bellows) / The two tennis lithographs and "Legs of the Sea" (M. 85) and "Bathing Beach" (M. 86), were souvenirs of two pleasant summers that the Bellows family spent at Middletown, Rhode Island. When drawing the aristocratic game of lawn tennis, the artist was more concerned with the elegance and pretenses of the spectators than he was with the actual contestants. The tennis lithographs were probably the earliest collaborative effort of Bellows and the printer Bolton Brown--they are not, however, noted in the artist's record book. (Mason). Artist/Printer: Bellows, George, 1882-1925; Brown, Bolton, 1864-1936. Date: ca. 1921. Sourced from Digital Commonwealth website.
