Measurement of Time: Polos

Active selection in cart:
Polos. The Polos or Heliotropion was no doubt a superior instrument to the earliest Gnomon, but, from it being so seldom mentioned, we may suppose it to have been not so generally used. The Polos consisted of a basin, in the middle of which the perpendicular staff or finger was erected, and marked by lines the twelve portions of the day. The dial was but another form of Polos. The name indicates Roman origin. Illustration for one of a set of 25 cigarette cards on the subject of Measurement of Time issued by Morris in 1924.
