Irish Industries, 1937: Sugar Refining

Active selection in cart:
Sugar Refining. Begun in 1927, the manufacture of Irish sugar is now carried on at four centres: Carlow, Mallow, Thurles and Tuam, and the needs of the community are fully supplied. Great care was necessary in the selection of factory sites, as good soil with limestone content, abundant water supply and a central position for mail and other transport are essential. For every ton of beet, three thousand gallons of water are required. As an indication of the amount of employment provided, it is estimated that an acre of sugar beet on medium soil entails 237 man hours of labour.
