Maison Carree. Nimes. The Maison Carree is one of the most perfect and best preserved Roman teniples in existence. It was built about 1 A.D., in the style of the Parthenon, 82 ft. long and 40 ft. wide, with Corinthian columns fluted and crowned with capitals of beautiful workmanship. The magnificent building was carefully restored (1824) and made inte a museunt, which now contains a collection of antique sculptures, medals, and coins. Nimes is 380 miles s.S.E. of Paris, and 67 miles N.w. of Marseilles, in the department of Gard. Illustration for one of a series of 50 cigarette cards on the theme of Gems of French Architecture issued by Wills in 1916.
