A Selector's Home, New England, New South Wales

A Selector's Home, New England, New South Wales. The occupier and builder of the strange little building which is here represented has availed himself of the privilege afforded by the laws of New South Wales, and has "selected" the land on which he lives, from the public domain of the State. He holds it under certain conditions, and when these conditions have been fulfilled he will be undisputed owner of his home. By that time, probably, his industry will have allowed him to construct a building of more ample dimensions and of a more convenient kind than the little "hut" in which his first years of yard work must needs be spant. In some cases these years of probation have been very few, and Colonists have risen with extraordinary rapidity from the humblest positions to wealth and station. Photograph from The Queen's Empire (Cassell, 1899).
