Caption | The Masonic Temple, Philadelphia. Freemasonry flourishes in the New World, where it has a congenial soil and finds countless opportunities to be of service to mankind, in furthering the humanitarian aims and benevolent enterprises of the brotherhood, otherwise apt to be sundered by political strife or religious prejudice. In the Quaker City, the craft have a guild-home of royal proportions, of which they well have a right to be proud. The Masonic Temple is situate at the corner of Broad and Filbert Streets, on the north side of City Hall Square, and is one of the most imposing and costly structures in Philadelphia. It took over four years to build (from 1868 to 1873), and cost one and a half millions of dollars. The style is Norman, with a magnificent tower, 250 feet in height, and an elaborately carved Norman porch. The building, which is of granite, has a frontage of 250 feet and a depth of 150 feet. The Interior is in keeping with Its exterior massiveness and solidity. The halls and lodge rooms of the Order are many and sumptuous. They are characteristically decorated in seven different styles of architecture-Egyptian Oriental, Ionic, Corinthian, Norman, Gothic, and the Renaissance. Freemasonry was Introduced into America in 1730, and up to the War of Independence it derived its warrant of authority from the Grand Lodge of the motherland. At the Revolution, the craft followed the example of the political Fathers of the country and set up a Republic, with a constitution and ritual, In part, of its own.
