Nature's Architects: Caterpillars of the Lackey Moth

Active selection in cart:
Caterpillars of the Lackey Moth. This is the commonest of the "Tent Caterpillars" which are so destructive to fruit trees in the midland, western and southern counties of England. The eggs hatch about the end of April, and the young caterpillars soon commence to spin a fine web enclosing a few of the leaves, upon which they proceed to feed. When these are eaten the silken shelter is enlarged enclosing more leaves; in large colonies it is sometimes nearly twelve inches in length. As the caterpillars grow they leave their tent to feed, returning to it at night and in wet weather. Illustration for one of a set of 25 cigarette cards on the subject of Nature's Architects issued by Churchman in 1930.
