Nature's Architects: Marsh Crocodiles

Active selection in cart:
Marsh Crocodiles. Among the reptiles of the Crocodile family we find two types of nests. The simplest is that of the Madagascar Crocodile, who just buries her eggs about two feet deep in the warm sand. The Alligator, however, builds a large mound of decaying leaves and vegetable matter in which she places the eggs, the heat of the decomposition assisting their incubation. Our picture shows a somewhat similar type of nest built by the Marsh Crocodile of the Dutch East Indies. In the picture the nest is shown open, actually the eggs are always covered. The mother remains close by to protect the eggs from marauding monkeys. Illustration for one of a set of 25 cigarette cards on the subject of Nature's Architects issued by Churchman in 1930.
