London Characters: The Covent Garden porter

Active selection in cart:
The Covent Garden porter. The Covent Garden Porter is "the Cockney of all the Cockneys," good-humoured, hard-working and possessed of a ready wit. Like his confreres at Billingsgate he has been accused of being a "linguist," but although his speech may on occasion be forceful and picturesque, there is doubtless many a fox-hunting squire who might give him points and a licking! See him in the early hours of the morning, when "The Garden" is at its busiest. To such a height do the heavy baskets and boxes rise above his head that one is positively thrilled; but give him a clear path, he is busy, and London is waiting to be fed. Illustration for one of a set of 25 cigarette cards on the subject of London Characters issued by Lambert & Butler in 1934.
