The Most Noble Order of the Garter

Active selection in cart:
The Most Noble Order of the Garter. The origin of the Order of the Garter is obscure, but it is believed to have been founded by Edward III about 1348. At a Court Ball, a lady said to have been the Countess of Salisbury dropped her garter. The King picked it up, and placed it on his left leg, silencing the comments of the onlookers with the famous remark, Honi soit qui mal y pense. The Order is without question the foremost in the world, and, apart from the Royal members there are but twenty-five Knights Companions. Their majesties are shown leaving the St George's Chapel, Windsor. Illustration for one of a set of 40 cigarette cards on the subject of London Ceremonials issued by Mitchells in 1928.
