Active selection in cart:
Caption | Kindling the Olympic torch, 1936. For the 1936 Olympic Games a sacred flame symbolising the reawakening of the Hellenic spirit was kindled on an altar in the sacred grove of Olympia at the foot of Mount Olympus, Greece, by focussing the sun's rays through a burning glass. Afterwards carried in the form of a torch to the Stadium in Southern Greece by twelve maidens attired in the ancient athletic short skirt, the flame was then relayed by 3,000 torch bearers (amongst whom were King Boris of Bulgaria, and the boy King Peter of Yugoslavia), through seven countries to relight the sacred fire in Berlin. Illustration for Photocard issued by Ardath Tobacco in c 1936. |
