Past & Present: The Railway Carriage

Active selection in cart:
The Railway Carriage. Early Railway Carriages. In 1833 some railway trucks were mere trolleys upon which the passengers travelled seated in their own carriages! Covered railway carriages with accommodation for luggage on the roof were provided for passengers who paid 2 1/2d or 3d a mile, while those travelling at cheaper rates had to be content with open carriages. Modern Dining Saloon. Contrast that with this comfortable dining saloon provided for third-class passengers to-day. The woodwork is of polished mahogany, the upholstered seats covered in leather and the floor carpeted. Electric lighting and fans are installed, while the fare provided is excellent. Illustration for one of a set of cigarette cards on the subject of Past & Present issued by Wills in 1929.
