Past & Present: The Plough

Active selection in cart:
The Plough. Early Type of Plough. The earliest known plough used in Egypt consisted merely of a wedge of wood tipped with iron and fastened to a handle held by the ploughman. Oxen were usually employed for hauling, though man-power was sometimes used. All early ploughs are virtually hoes pulled through the ground, the soil being broken up but not turned over. Multiple Disk Plough. As this type of plough is drawn forward each revolving disk cuts deeply into the ground, its slope crowding the earth outwards and so turning a furrow. In the vast agricultural areas of Canada and the States great 25-furrow disk-ploughs are hauled by steam traction.
