Caption | Schembartlaufer. Translation: Schembartlaufer. Schembartlaufen was the name of the costumed carnival parade of the guilds in various southern German cities, named after the old word scheme (mask, mask). Since these processions often degenerated into riots, they were banned in Nurnberg in 1539. Our picture shows the Schembartlaufer on the market in Nurnberg with the beautiful fountain and the Frauenkirche. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934). |
