Thais persuading Alexander to burn Persepolis, 330 BC
Active selection in cart:
Caption | Thais persuading Alexander to burn Persepolis, 330 BC. The burning, it is said at the instance of his mistress Thais, of Persepolis, the splendid mother-city of the Achaemenids, was a blot on the career of Alexander which he always regretted. It must be remembered, however, that there were strong political reasons for making it clear to the public that the power of the successors of Cyrus was destroyed for ever. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c 1920). Note: Image has been digitally enhanced to facilitate repro. |
