Caption | The Wreck of the Birkenhead. HMS Birkenhead was a British troopship wrecked off the coast of South Africa in 1852. The ship was carrying insufficient lifeboats, so the soldiers remained on board while the women and children were evacuated. Of 643 people on board only 193 survived the disaster.
