Mentre, di ritorno dall'Argentina, navigava a circa 700 miglia al largo delle Azzorre, il veliero-scuola della marina tedesca Pamir, al comando del capitano Joseph Diebitsch, e stato investito da Carrie, uragano di violenza inaudita. Dopo aver lungamente lottato contro la tempesta, il quattro-alberi e affondato. Piu di venti navi e numerosi aerei sono accorsi prontamente sul luogo del sinistro.
