Traffic flows along new highways. The Sikang-Tibet and Chinghai-Tibet Highways, which span the "roof of the world," were opened to traffic in December 1954. The 1,400-mile-long Sikang-Tibet Highway starts from Yaan, the capital of Sikang Province, and runs to Lhasa, and the 1,300-mile-long Chinghai-Tibet Highway, from Sining, the capital of Chinghai Province, to Lhasa.
