Caption | Clovis I and the Vase of Soissons. A sacred vase said to have been looted from a church by soldiers of the Frankish King Clovis I after the Battle of Soissons (486). Remigius, Bishop of Reims, asked Clovis to return the vase to the church, which he agreed to do, but one of his soldiers disagreed with his decision and smashed the vase with his axe. Clovis later killed the soldier with the same axe. French educational card, late 19th/early 20th century. |
