Caption | Emile Gentil (1866–1914), French naval officer and explorer. The death of Lieutenant Henri Bretonnet at the Battle of Togbao, in what is now Chad, in August 1899. The virtual annihalation of Bretonnet's column by the army of Rabih az-Zubayr led to the French sending three armed expeditions, one commanded by Gentil, to overthrow Rabih and claim the territory for France.
