Caption | Christopher Columbus in the Friaryy of La Rabida, 1490s. Columbus stayed at the friary for two years before his famous voyage to America, after his request to Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain to fund the expedition had been turned down. The guardian of La Rabida, Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros, who was also Isabella's confessor, was able to persuade the king and queen to hear Columbus' proposal. Illustration for Glorias Espanola by Carlos Mendoza (Ramon Molinas, c 1880). |
