The man in the picture, General Charles Gordon (1833-1885) was killed while defending the city of Khartoum. Khartoum stands at the junction of the White Nile and the Blue Nile. After Gordon's death, the British retook Khartoum, which was capital of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan from 1899 until Sudan's independence in 1956.
