Mungo Park

Active selection:
The man in the picture is Mungo Park (1771-1806). Park contributed greatly to mapping the course of the Niger and published a successful book, Travels in the Interior of Africa. On his second expedition, after traveling 1,000 miles along the Niger River, his boat became stuck on a rock and was attacked by local tribesmen with arrows and spears. Park and the only two surviving Europeans in his party jumped into the river and were drowned.
