The Pale

Active selection:
In 1494 a ditch called 'The pale' was ordered to be dug around parts of Meath, Dublin, Kildare and Louth to protect the areas of English influence from the Gaels. This is why the word "pale," which originally referred to a boundary stake, now means a limit as in the phrase "beyond the pale.".
