South Pole Expedition

Active selection:
Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his expedition reached the South Pole on January 17, 1912. They were the second expedition to reach the pole. The entire party perished on the return journey. Oates left the tent on his thirty-second birthday, saying "I am just going out and I may be some time" and died outside in the snow. Despite his self-sacrifice, his companions died, too.
