Caption | Androcles was a Roman slave who, on one occasion, removed a thorn from a lion's paw. Later, he was very glad that he had done this. The story first appears in Attic Nights by Aulus Gellius. Many centuries later, George Bernard Shaw wrote his play Androcles and the Lion. In the play, Androcles is a Christian who is brought to the Roman Coliseum to be eaten by lions. Androcles is also known as Androclus. |
