The first coins were issued in the 7th century BC by the people of Lydia, in Asia Minor. Lydia was in western Asia Minor, in the region of the modern Turkish city of Izmir. The first coins were made of electrum, a mixture of gold and silver, and stamped with a lion's head, the king's symbol.
