Icebergs

Caption | Most substances expand and occupy more space when they are heated, and contract when they get cold. Water does exactly the opposite. When water gets so cold that it freezes it expands. For example, an amount of liquid water that occupied a space of eleven cubic inches would expand and occupy a space of 12 cubic inches if it was frozen and became ice. Because ice is lighter than water, it floats on the surface of the water. In this picture, icebergs are shown floating in water. |
