Cleopatra and her brother were joint King and Queen of Egypt, but they quarelled. Cleopatra received a secret message from Julius Caesar and went to meet him in Alexandria, accompanied only by her slave, Apollodorus. To reach Caesar without being seen, she laid herself down on a carpet which Apollodorus tied up with a leather thong. The slave took the carpet up on his back and, saying that he had a present which he would only give to Caesar, he was taken before the General. There he unrolled the carpet.
