| Caption | The Syracuse Expedition. Unwilling to entrust the Syracuse expedition to just one general, the citizens of Athens instead chose three ment to lead the attack. Nicles (centre) was put to death with the final defeat of the Athenians on the island; Lamachus (right) was killed in an early battle during the building of a siege wall; while Alcibiades (left), the most brilliant of the three, was recalled to face charges of sacrilege – and on his way home he escaped and defected to the side of Sparta. |
