William the Conqueror injured at Mantes-la-Joilie in 1087

William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy, took and burned the town of Mantes-la-Joilie in 1087. His horse stumbled on a red-hot splinter and William was badly hurt. He died at Rouen six weeks later. From Look and Learn 1025 (31 October 1981).
