Loading of the Mary Dear, the ship intended to transport the Inca Treasure of Lima to Mexico, 1820. The Mary Dear was filled with gold from Peru and Spanish nobles. During the voyage William Thompson, the captain of the ship, and his crew murdered the guards and priests accompanying the treasure, which they stole and buried. Despite the efforts of many treasure hunters, it remains missing. Original artwork from Look and Learn no. 457 (17 October 1970).
