The Boxer Rebellion. Disruption of the railway line was anticipated by the expedition's leaders, who had brought along a gang of coolies to repair the damage (left). With four junks carrying their supplies, equipment and wounded, the expedition set off downstream (right). Progress was slow and the Boxers were a constant threat.
