Emperor Maximilian

Active selection in cart:
The Emperor who was doomed to die. Original artwork for illustration on p26 of Look and Learn issue no. 527 (19 February 1972). Maximilian, one of history's most pitiful rulers, knew that he must abdicate, but his wife would not hear of it. Not until it was too late did she realise her folly. Here was an Austrian Archduke whose tragic fate was determined by his proud Belgian wife and Napoleon III, who withdrew his troops from Mexico rather than face a war with America.
