Hounded from State to State for their religious practices, the Mormons finally decided to leave settled American territory and trek into the unexplored Rocky Mountains and find a homeland of their own. Although close to starvation in Winter, the pioneers would not eat meat stored in a mountain cabin because their religion considered it unclean. To avoid temptation they broke the ice and flung the meat into the chilly waters.
