King Henry VI. After the battle of St Albans, in which his favourite the Duke of Somerset was killed, the king walked disgustedly off the field and into a nearby house. There the rebel Duke of York found him and falling on his knees said: "Rejoice, sire, for the traitor Somerset is slain" The king cried out in anguish: "For God's sake stop this slaughter of my subjects!"
