Departure of James II

Caption | Departure of James II. When William of Orange landed in England, James II was at Salisbury with his army. He returned to London on 26th November 1688, but, realising that his cause was lost for the time being at least, he took flight for France. The inset shows Sir Robert Walpole wagering a guinea on his classical accuracy – unfortunately for him, he was wrong. Original artwork for illustration on pp14–15 of Look and Learn issue no 396 (16 August 1969). |
