Caption | Crimean War. The carts rumbling along the roads were loaded with men who had faced the perils of war, the incompetence of their leaders, cold and starvation. Now they were facing the worst enemy of all – cholera! And, as if this were not enough, fire broke out in Varna and raged for ten hours before the troops controlled it. Original artwork for illustration in Look and Learn issue no 488 (22 May 1971). |
