| Caption | It's the Law. Left: An accused man might be given a "cursed morsel". He would have to swallow whole a piece of bread or cheese containing an irritant, like a feather. If he choked, it was taken as a sign of his guilt. Right: The pillory. Sometimes an offender would be pelted with stones and bricks by the crowd.
